We have all heard the phrase, “content is king.” But, what does that really mean? Personally I hate that phrase with a passion. I hear this phrase within the SEO/sem market more often than I hear about Disney stars and naked pics! AHEM BRITNEY….AHEM…VANESSA HUDGENS…..MILEYYYY- CMONNN- now that’s too much Content is king lol. However I digress.

So the real question is how are companies leveraging content to grow their businesses online? Major search engines deliver answers to consumer or searcher questions. When a keyword or keyword phrase is entered into the search engine, a variety of website options are presented for the individual to browse. When businesses learn to leverage these keywords and keyword phrases within their content, they are better positioned to capitalize on the traffic- meaning they begin to win that SEO battle.

The first thing to focus on is to narrow down the business’s list of targeted keywords. This is imperative in any search engine optimization/ search engine marketing campaign. I mean don’t just pick a freaking keyword out of the sky….yep- I love….Lamp. WRONG! FAIL! Negative! You probably typed in something similar to “Italian restaurant in Soho”, or “Italian Restaurant on Prince Street in NYC”. There you go- these are your keyword phrases. One words keyword terms are out the door. People generally search for phrases of three words or more. The next thing is to create content. Don’t spin your wheels- this is a researched and proven fact.

Content should include blog posts, articles and press releases. These content types should not only be uploaded to your website, but also to directories online. When content is uploaded to the actual website, it helps to boost the natural page rank. Page rank refers to which page the URL will appear on in terms of individual keyword searches. Therefore, a higher page rank could mean a higher amount of website traffic.

When the content is posted onto other websites and directories, links are included to draw readers back the business’s website. If the reader likes the content, they will often click on links or the actual URL included in the author’s box to learn more.

So, content needs to be created around the focused keywords, it needs to be uploaded both on the business’s website and to directories, and it needs to be updated content to build online traffic successfully.
